Spring is finally here! The days are gradually waxing and waning into warm, sunny days and later hours of daylight. It’s time to begin thinking about all of those outside activities for you and your family. This is the time to make a habit of putting down all of those electronic devices we have worn out over the cold, winter months and spending time outside getting some physical activity and fresh air on a daily basis. The sedentary activity and staring at a screen can be very unhealthy for all of us and finding that balance in your day is extremely important at all ages.
The American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons has a campaign “Get Up, Get Out, Get Moving!” which reminds kids to get active. Now is the time to get the bikes ready, find the scooters and the skateboards. Baseball is right around the corner. Yard work is waiting; picking up the twigs and sticks left over from the snow, raking the left over leaves and debris, sweeping sidewalks and front steps. These are all good activities to start getting your kids outside and active. Make it a family project for a few hours in an afternoon so everyone gets the benefit of activity, fresh air, and sunshine. Do a little yard work and then go for that bike ride or a long walk as a family.
It doesn’t take much time to plan an outdoor activity that will fit into your family’s busy schedule. Spending time together, being active, and enjoying the outdoors is always time well spent for your physical as well as mental well-being. So “Get Up, Get Out, and Get Moving!”
