Overdone your New Year’s Resolution?

Was your New Year’s Resolution this year to get fit and in shape?  Good for you!  Almost half of all resolutions fall into this category.  We are now almost a month into the New Year.  If you have kept up with your commitment, you have probably been noticing some muscle aches, stiffness, and soreness for your efforts.  This is perfectly normal.  These symptoms are often delayed onset muscle soreness or “DOMS” and typically show up 1-2 days after a workout and can last from 3-5 days as your muscles get used to new motions and activity.  These may occur often as you increase your exercise activities, whether you are new to the activity or do exercises routinely as your muscles adjust and repair.  Rest,  ice packs, OTC anti-inflammatories or massage can aide in the relief of this soreness.  If your “aches” would be described more as acute, sudden, sharp pain; you may have sustained a muscle strain or sprain which would necessitate more of the suggestions above, rest, ice packs, etc. until those symptoms resolve; however, if your symptoms are severe or last for a longer period of time, you should seek medical attention to get a professional diagnosis and treatment suggestions.   We are here to help.  We have Orthopedic Surgeons and Physician Assistants who can examine you and help develop a treatment plan to get you back to your resolution goals!
