You may have heard the term osteoporosis before, but are uncertain about what osteoporosis is and how it can impact your health. In this blog, we’ll discuss osteoporosis, its causes, common symptoms, and potential treatments.

What is Osteoporosis?

Osteoporosis is a disease that causes bones to become weak and brittle. Bone tissue is living, and constantly being replaced by your body. When new bone tissue isn’t being created as fast as old bone tissue is being broken down, osteoporosis occurs.

Symptoms of Osteoporosis

Osteoporosis has fewer symptoms than other diseases, but some include:

  • Bones that break more easily than expected
  • Changes in posture
  • Back pain
  • Losing an inch or more of your height

Additionally, the most common injuries in people with osteoporosis include a broken wrist, broken hip, or broken spinal bones.

Preventing Osteoporosis

There is no cure for osteoporosis, but there are treatments that can help. Eat healthy, particularly foods high in calcium and vitamin D. Exercise regularly, and make lifestyle changes such as reducing alcohol intake and quitting smoking.
