Do You Need a Total Joint Replacement?

Deciding to have a joint replacement is a big decision, which can help relieve pain and enable you to live a fuller, more active life. All orthopedic care, but especially a total joint replacement, should be a cooperative decision between you and your orthopedic surgeon. It is important to give yourself time to prepare for the physical, psychological, and social aspects of joint replacement surgery.

Planning ahead for the challenges of surgery and recovery will help ensure a more successful outcome. Arthroplasty means the surgical repair of a joint. Orthopedic surgeons performing an arthroplasty use metal and/or plastic parts to reconstruct worn-down, damaged, or arthritic joint surfaces. This has been effective as a treatment for arthritis patients who have failed nonsurgical treatment and have disabling function, limitation of activities of daily living, and severe pain.

Specialized Treatment Services

At Iowa Specialty Hospitals & Clinics and Orthopedic Specialists, our team of surgeons is committed to ensuring the best course of treatment for your joint health. As orthopedic surgery experts, our surgeons have specialized training and vast experience in the disease processes and injuries of the hip, knee, and shoulder. Whether you need an outpatient arthroscopy or a total joint replacement, here at ISH-Orthopedic Specialists our surgeons provide minimally invasive techniques that will help restore your function and mobility.

Total joint replacements have come a long way. Previously patients stayed in the hospital for several days to recover, only to make their way into another physical therapy session. Thanks to medical advancements, research, and technology, the surgeons at ISH-Orthopedic Specialists are able to provide better outcomes and quicker recovery times for our patients.

Outpatient total joint replacement is now being performed on select patients at ISH-Orthopedic Specialists. Outpatient total joint replacement patients must meet medical criteria to be considered for this option, and also have appropriate home setting and support to allow discharge the same day. To improve the surgical process our surgeons have implemented the Enhanced Recovery After Surgery (ERAS) after an operation.

The surgeons and staff at Iowa Specialty Hospitals & Clinics and Orthopedic Specialists continue to utilize multiple pathways, including but not limited to a variety of pain management techniques to ensure your safety, pain management, and quick recovery.

As Iowa’s orthopedic experts, we encourage you to reach out with any further questions you may have in regards to a total joint replacement including knee replacement, hip replacement, or shoulder replacement. Here at Iowa Specialty Hospital, we want you to feel as prepared as you can be prior to your surgery by specializing in you.
