What is a Ganglion Cyst?
A ganglion cyst is a non-cancerous, fluid-filled lump that typically forms on the back or front of the wrist, although it can also appear near other joints, such as the ankle or hand. These cysts are filled with synovial fluid, which lubricates and cushions joints and tendons. While ganglion cysts are generally harmless, they can cause pain or affect joint movement. In many cases, they can disappear on their own over time, but if pain or limited movement persists, treatment may be necessary.
A ganglion cyst is sometimes referred to as a “Bible bump,” due to the erroneous theory that it may be treated by hitting it with a large book such as a Bible. This is NOT recommended and can actually be dangerous.
What is the Treatment for a Ganglion Cyst?
If a ganglion cyst causes pain or restricts movement, there are two main treatment options:
- Cyst Aspiration (Draining the Fluid) – A needle is used to drain the fluid from the cyst. However, the cyst's outer shell remains intact, which means it may return over time.
- Surgical Excision – This is a more permanent solution where the entire cyst and surrounding tissue are removed. This procedure is typically performed under local anesthesia and takes about 15 to 30 minutes. While excision removes the cyst, there is still a chance it can recur.
Both procedures are usually done on an outpatient basis, meaning you can go home the same day. The decision between aspiration and excision depends on the severity of the cyst and how it affects your daily activities.
After the Procedure
Following surgery, a bandage will be applied to the area to reduce the risk of infection and protect it from accidental bumps. Most patients do not experience significant pain, but painkillers will be provided if needed. If the cyst is removed from the wrist or hand, you may need to wear a sling for a few days to protect the area and minimize swelling. Regular finger movement will help keep the joints flexible.
Some bruising, swelling, or stiffness may occur, but this typically fades within a few weeks. If any infection or persistent pain develops, antibiotics or physical therapy may be necessary for further recovery.
Recovery and Returning to Normal Activities
The amount of time you need to take off work depends on the location of the cyst and the type of work you do. Those involved in manual labor may need to take additional time off. You can usually resume driving when it feels safe. It’s important to follow your orthopedic surgeon’s aftercare instructions to ensure a smooth recovery and reduce the risk of complications.
What are the Risks of Ganglion Surgery?
Although ganglion cyst removal is generally a safe and straightforward procedure, there are some risks, including:
- Infection at the surgical site
- Allergic reactions to anesthesia or stitches
- Sensitivity around the scar tissue
- Damage to nearby tendons, nerves, or ligaments
- Loss of normal wrist function
Though complications are rare, it's essential to understand these potential risks before surgery. In some cases, the cyst may return, especially if it's located on certain areas of the wrist.
What are the Benefits of Ganglion Surgery?
Surgical removal can provide long-term relief from pain and discomfort, especially for large cysts that don't respond to other treatments. It removes the source of your discomfort, allowing for improved mobility and function. While recurrence is possible, the benefits of a properly performed excision can be significant for those with persistent symptoms.
